Today's 5km

I ran a surprisingly easy 5 km tonight.  I was really amazed how easy it was actually.  I usually try and run a specific distance in a set time period, which is usually fast, so I feel like I'm really working and running hard.  But tonight I wanted to simply finish a 5km at a steady pace. I did it in about 30mins, then walked for about 10mins on an incline.
Every week I'll add 10% to my run, so next Thursday I will run 5.5km, maybe up the pace a tad bit.
And the days in between I'll run fast short runs, hills, long slow runs, etc. Mix it up some.
I'm going to take tomorrow off then run again Sat. morning!

If they can, I can!

I was just scrolling through some of the blogs on blogger, and it seemed as if 4 of every 5 blogs were about running, or people training for a race, or people trying to lose weight by running, or people who just love running period. So I've come to the conclusion that if there are that many people out there running "10 miles in freshly fallen snow," then surely I can run 10 miles on the treadmill. And if I can run 10 miles on the treadmill, then I can definitely run a 10 km race. And if I can run a 10 km race, then I can definitely run a half-marathon. And if I can run a half-marathon, then I can definitely run a full marathon.

So there! I can! and I will!

With that being said I will start training for a 5 km race.  I don't know when the race is yet, but whenever I get back to post, I will run in the next '5km Fun Run' they have every month, then from there I will build up to the finale!  It's January now, so by the end of the year I would like to have completed a full marathon (that would be the finale).

Starting tomorrow I will run a 5km run and then up the distance 10% each week.

"Obsession is a word the lazy use to describe dedication". So just keep on running!

Rain then Snow then...??

So I'm starting to wonder what's next with the weather.
First, it's flooding in California, causing mudslides and people were even kayaking through the streets. In Arizona it was snowing so much they had to close their airport.
And now, here in Cobourg we've had both these crazy weather patterns!

20 km hike!!!

We did it!!! We finished a 20 km hike today!!!
We left Bodilogix at roughly 7:30am this morning and continued along Ontario St. and out of Cobourg.  Ontario St. was a loooong one, but once we were out of Cobourg the scenery was so beautiful!  We passed horses, sheep, we even saw a man harness riding out in the country.  The fileds look gorgeous in the sunlight and the snow covered areas were even more stunning! It was a great walk!
We finished in just around 4 hours and my legs were/are really feeling it!
Off to soak in the tub!!!

The Great Outdoor Runs Begin...

Went running outside today in preparation for the 20km hike I'm doing on Friday.
Let me just start by saying ' BRRRRRRR'
I'm definitely going to need gloves!!  Other than my bare hands, it wasn't so bad. My body was pretty warm from running, but I'm not too sure how warm it will be just walking.
Today's run was about 30min...roughly 5k.

Vegas and his girl :)

I just wanted to share a little story about our recent encounter with the kennel we use on post.

My husband (American) and I traveled to visit my family in Canada over the Christmas holidays. throughout the past year we have been dealing with immigration as we are applying for my permanent residency in the U.S. Well once you are in the immigration process you are not allowed to leave the country without a 'travel document,' which we knew, so we applied for one at the very beginning of October. We were told by an immigration lawyer that it usually only takes a couple of weeks for the document to come in. but by December we still had not received anything. As our travel dates approached I called immigration to inquire about the situation and I was told that we could travel with our receipts showing we are going through the process and that I live there, and we would be fine. Unfortunately, they were wrong. We were stopped at the border and I was denied entry. As of right now they are doing everything they can to help me, as it was their fault this situation even came about. But anyways, so now I am in Canada still and my husband had to return to work. A week after getting back to California he had to go out for field training and would be away from home for an entire month. Meanwhile Vegas was in the kennel for the 2 weeks over the holidays and now, with me being stuck in Canada and my husband having to go away for a month Vegas would have to go back t the place he dreads

I was so upset knowing he would be locked up all day for an entire month right after being in there for 2 weeks. (He's not actually locked up ALL day, but you know how the kennels are...)

Then the other day I received a call from the manager at the kennel. She explained to me how she brings her bulldog into work everyday she is there and lets her play with the other dogs there, but right now Vegas is the only one there. She explained how at night he stays by himself and she feels bad that the kennel is so dead now and he has to be all alone, SO, she offered, for no extra charge to doggysit Vegas for us! She would bring Vegas home at night and take care of him, then when she goes to work she would bring him and her bulldog and they can just play together there. This was such a blessing! I was ecstatic! She lives right on post near us and she gave me her cell phone and email, and I already have the kennel's number. She's called me every other day to let me know how Vegas is doing, and today she even sent me some pictures!

I can't even tell you how far a kind gesture like this can go! She has really made me much more at ease about being away from him.
Here are some pics she sent today:

work it!

Took yesterday off from the gym, but today was back at it.
I'm a little blistered up still, so today I just did the eliptical for 30 mins, but hard. and jogged lightly on the treadmill for 25, near the end of the jog I got the incline up to level 13!!!  It was like walking up a wall!! Soooo hard!!!!
Just remember.....
It takes 21 days to turn a resolution into a habit. So don't give up!

The Eat Clean Diet

Today we started the Eat- Clean diet.
Today's menu:
Breakfast - real oatmeal with dried fruit and nuts + water to drink
Mid- morning snack - fruit smoothie with protein powder
Lunch - a chicken wrap with baby spinach and feta cheese and a baked chicken breast
Mid- afternoon snack - melba toast crackers
Dinner - Roasted Garlic and sweet potato soup
late- night snack before bed - smoothie

Everything was really good, except the oatmeal, I think tomorrow I will mix it with yogurt and more fresh berries.

For today's workout I did a 5 min warm up on the eliptical and then I ran 4miles in 33 mins. By Friday I'm hoping to get it down to 30mins.

Back to the kennel for Vegas, and to the field for the hubs :(

Today Vegas had to return to the kennel while the hubs heads to the field and I'm still in Canada. This is the longest I've been away from him and it blows!  He'll be celebrating his 1 year birthday there :(

We miss you Vegas!

Have fun in the field!! we miss you too!!

mini-workout

I forgot to post yesterday about our mini-workout.  We went to the gym for just under an hour yesterday. I did 40 mins on the eliptical and it was a gooood 40 mins. I did intervals of fast and medium paced, and it seems like when I do that I get a better workout in.
Today I'm taking a rest from the gym and will do some medicine ball stuff in the family room.
I also did 5 chin ups today!! Over Christmas I was only able to do 3. I'm going to try and do 1 more each day.  I've also gone 3 days without chocolate!!!

3 mile run

Today I warmed up for about 10 mins on the eleiptical and then started my 3 mile run on the treadmill.
The running itself felt easier today than yesterday, but my feet are killing me now!! They are punishing me for not wearing my own running shoes and using borroed ones!
But I completed my 3 miles!!  I ran it pretty lightly in just under 30 mins. I did a 40 min run, but didn't keep track of the distance after I reached 3 miles.
I'm pretty sore, but I think I've managed to lose the holiday weight already just from eating lighter meals, and I did manage to go a whole 24 hrs without chocolate!!  Yay!!!!

Berry Smoothie

Berry Smoothie - by me

2 handful of fresh blueberries
2 Activia yogurts (I used 1 strawberry and 1 raspberry)
1 cup of frozen mixed berries
1 dollop of vanilla ice cream

Mix all ingredients in a blender, and viola!

And the Workouts Start!

As I am still currently in Canada, I figured what better way to blow off steam than working out and running!
My parents and I all went to the gym this evening in hopes of starting a new, healthy lifestyle.
Our regime will consist of a small breakfast of a pretein smoothie and fruit, and then lunch will be our bigger meal of the day (not sure about exact meal ideas yet, still looking into them), and for dinner we'll eat a salad and some meat.
We'll be going to the gym in evenings, so we are shooting for dinner before we go, and then a light snack when we get back.  Clementines are great for a light snack now while they are still in season!

As for today's workout, I am sticking to aerobic machines only for now, so today I did a light warm up on the eliptical for 10 mins, and then I ran for 30 mins on the treadmill. I ran in intervals, going from fast to medium to slow and speeding back up a few times. Once my 30 mins was over I walked for a cool down for about 10 mins.

The run itself felt good. It was nice to get back into it, and it wasn't painful at all.....not yet anyways.
Tomorrow I'm going to shoot for a 3 mile run.

Afterwards, I enjoyed a protein smoothie at home!

My goal is to work my way up to a 10 mile run, but for now I'll just be running for 30-40mins to get back in shape, no more than 3 miles really for now.

Happy Holidays!

A Canadian Christmas

The hubs and I started our long journey home to Cobourg around 2am on the 18th. We drove to the Vegas airport (3 hours away) to catch our 7:15am flight, then finally landed in Buffalo around 4:30pm. It was freeeeezing when we landed!!! But it was great to be home!
Over the couple of weeks home we attended holiday parties, a Raptor's game and celebrated Christmas with the family with a huge Christmas morning brunch and also a dinner the following day.  We also went glow in the dark mini-putting and had a quick visit to Niagara Falls before I was denied entry to the U.S!!  booooo.
While we missed Vegas horribly, we had a great time away from the desert. And now I'm just waiting for my 'travel documents' to arrive so I can cross the border to get back home.
